The Santa Fe, New Mexico area offers a multitude of cultural and scenic attractions for RVers. One of the more scenic areas to explore is Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, located about 40 miles west of Santa Fe near the Pueblo de Cochiti, a historic pueblo of the Cochiti people. Trails: The 1.2-mile Cave Loop Trail is easy and fairly flat. It is good for seeing “Apache Tears” and a few of the Tent Rock formations. However, the 1.5-mile Slot Canyon Trail (which includes a portion of the Cave Loop Trail) has much better views. Plus, a very up-close view of the formations. We suggest doing both by taking a 3.2-mile loop. In our most recent to Santa Fe, we had researched the National Monument. I had understood that there was a slot canyon trail. What I didn't realize is just how neat the Trail is. At about the half-way point on the Cave Trail, there was a ‘T’ with another trail taking off. This was the Slot Canyon Trail. It went further into the canyon through a slot canyon and up onto a bluff where there was supposed to be a fabulous 360 degree view. This is very close to Cochiti Pueblo and Cochiti Lake Recreation Area. Beautiful hike thru a slot Canyon. About 3.5 miles round trip hike. Parts of the trail are strenuous. We are in your 70’s and did just fine. Slow but sure. We were there on a Tuesday. Still a little crowded, but many were in the area because of the Albuquerque Balloon Festival.

See full list on alltrails.com What makes this hike fun is that it’s a relatively easy hike that includes walking through (and a few climbing over rocks) in the slot canyons as well as hiking up to the top of the cliffs for some stunning views of the rocks from bottom to top, if you take the 1.5 mile each way Canyon Trail to the overlook 630 feet up. Exiting the slot canyon the area will open up more and you'll get closer to some massive hoodoos. The trail starts to climb from here for a short while until you reach the mesa top, dotted with gnarled old juniper trees. Take a break and enjoy the view up here before heading back the way you came. If you're heading north to Santa Fe, stop by Second Street Brewery for a great beer and green chile cheeseburger. Getting there: From Santa Fe, take the Cochiti Pueblo Exit 264 off I-25 onto NM 16.
